Ottoman Empire
a Turkish sultanate of southwestern Asia and northeastern Africa and southeastern Europe; created by the Ottoman Turks in 1299 and lasted until 1922; although initially small it expanded until it superseded the Byzantine Empire; at the height of its power in the 16th and 17th centuries, its territory included Anatolia, the Middle East, parts of North Africa, and much of south-eastern Europe to the Caucasus.
